The Foundation

Our Vision:

The Robert E. Gard Foundation is committed to helping people and their communities discover the vital role the arts play in their day-to-day lives.

Our Mission:

  • We believe that the arts spring from the commonplace and celebrate our essential humanity
  • We believe that the arts, when nurtured and expressed, can change people and their communities for the better.
  • We believe that in community development through the arts, each of us has the capacity to "alter the face and the heart of America."

Our Objectives:

The Robert E. Gard Foundation aspires to be a living legacy, celebrating and perpetuating the life and work of Robert E. Gard.

  • We are committed to making Robert E. Gard's work accessible.
  • We are committed to being a catalyst and a convener.
  • We are committed to being a collaborator and a partner.
  • We are committed to identifying and sharing best practices for community development through the arts.

The Foundation was formed in 1980 as an outgrowth of Robert Gard's University of Wisconsin projects stemming from the 1940s. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 private, nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the arts. Unlike most foundations, the Robert E. Gard Foundation does not grant funds.
